Photographs of the American West, as it still is

Danette Steele reflected in a motorcycle mirror while photographing

I've been taking pictures since I was a kid. My father was a professional, award-winning photographer, and he loved teaching me: the skills, the knowledge, and the patience behind the art of photography. About seven years ago I got serious, and I haven't put the camera down since.

Today I photograph the West as it actually is, across Colorado, New Mexico and Oklahoma: high deserts and night skies, vintage trucks rusting right where they were parked, working ranches, mustangs and wildlife. Nothing is staged or styled. If it's in a photo, it was really parked, grazing or standing in that light.

Most of these images take patience. In 2025 I drove the Piceance-East Douglas Herd Management Area most of the day before I found the wild mustangs I'd come for. That's usually how it goes: back roads, early mornings, and staying out after everyone else has gone home.

Why limited editions

Every image prints in a numbered edition of 50 or fewer, then retires for good. I keep the ledger myself: every edition, every number, every buyer. Each print is made with archival inks on fine art paper, hand-numbered, and ships with a certificate of authenticity.
